Hi, My name is Mandy and this is my story.
I am the artist behind Queen Bee Ceramics- named aptly after my beloved French Bulldog Betty or “Queen Bee”. 21 years in clay and I have never given myself the chance to be an artist in full capacity. I’ve always found myself with one foot in and one foot out in something more “practical”. It has been through immense grief that I’ve realized there is no time to be practical in this life. Clay is a part of my soul, the thing that makes me tick, makes my brain lose track of time, makes the saying “you’ll never work a day in your life doing something you love” ring true. I have decided to embrace my role as an artist in this world.
My current body of work is a reflection of the times that brought me great happiness with my Mom. Time spent at the shore in Rhode Island as a child. The sun, the waves, the bright colors and patterns seen on the beach, the taste of a cold Dels lemonade on a “scorcha” of a day. My forms are inspired by my Mother’s obsession with antiques and while she sought out the old oak pieces traditional to New England, I was always partial to the clean forms of Mid Century Modern glass makers. I hope to bring these forms into the modern era with new twists on function, color, and design. Pieces that evoke whimsy, happiness, and a time in life that was simpler- less encumbered by the weight of adulthood.
